Why professional Photography is so important in Interior Design
Since starting Country Interior Design by MJ back in February, one of my main priorities was to build an interior design portfolio. The main thing new clients ask is to see your previous work. I liken it to the Chicken and Egg scenario. Without a portfolio then how can you demonstrate your interior design expertise? Without clients how can you build your portfolio in the first instance? I took it upon myself to create my own interior design showroom by way of redesigning a caravan as a mobile showroom. Challenge overcome!!
I have since made over two Caravans, one in an Art Deco interior design influence and one in Country Core style. I was delighted with the results, then I took it upon myself to photograph the finished results. My only disappointment was, that the photos looked amateur at best and I wanted to have images that demonstrated my passion and ID expertise and I quickly realized I needed a photographer that not only took professional photos, but one that could capture the atmosphere and stylish design picking up the small details. The additional touches, such as colour hues, textures, furnishings, lighting, specially selected homeware pieces & spacial design.
I titled this blog as, "Why professional Photography is so important in Interior Design", I believe the above goes a long way to demonstrate my point.
I've met a number of phenomenal photographers since starting self employment over 15 years ago and I have had the pleasure of learning more about their individual niches. You tend to find out that many of these professionals do in fact have a niche in photography.
My personal urge to you as an interior designer or a business that is considering the use of a Photographer is to definitely do it, and here's why:
*First Impressions: The first time a client comes across your work, you want to portray a professional and capability.
* Help you to produce a professional portfolio that mirrors the quality of your work.
* They can capture the mood & intent of a design with artistry and clever lighting.
*True colour representation: everyone can remember the brown gold coloured dress meme that went viral. You want to have your room design to demonstrate the true look as if looking at a room in person.
*If your offering a luxury or highend brand as an interior designer, your portfolios representation online should emulate your quality services and a skilled photographer adds that professional touch with stunning images. NB: most clients often discover IDs through Social Media, so you want to stop the stroll by having polished pictures.
Understandably like me, as a start up, you may not be in a position to appoint a photographer for every image, so it's worth initially just having a small number of personal images of your work. While there are a number of excellent free image websites on line, if you want to be authentic and build trust with new clients, it's definitely worth having your own designs viewable.
*Your marketing objectives may involve things like press releases or Award recognition, the coverage this can bring to your business is HUGE, quality images are an absolute must here.
