Self Builders and Interior Design

Are you a lover of Grand Designs on TV, with Kevin Mccloud? Grand designs has returned to our screens, celebrating 25 yrs of this iconic Property Show. How many times do they get to the big reveal at the end and the homeowners are completely despondent and disillusioned?

That's the only downside to this show, at a time when the self builders have achieved their dream home, they should feel enthusiastic and energised.

I visited Build it Live in Malvern earlier in the year, which is a fantastic show for aspiring Self Builders to gain knowledge and learn about suppliers and innovative techniques to self build.  Yet, I didn't see many interior designers there. Now while I personally see this as an opportunity.  It got me thinking about the whole process of Self Building.

Decision making fatigue is a thing, especially on an astronomical project like building your home, but surely we can together make it a more enjoyable experience.

I always beat the drum about the fact that WE, interior designers are here to help you design your dream home into reality. At a time when there are so many choices to be made, it's definitely worth exploring, the appointment of an interior designer.  Let's face it, you rarely see self builders picking up the bricks and mortar, so why should it be different for the internal parts of your home??

I offer Online Room Reviews for example, which are a more affordable way of gaining interior designers expertise, but my biggest suggestion is to ensure that you allocate a budget in the planning stages to interior design.  The best way to describe it is.  How disappointing is it to watch an episode of Grand Designs and see that Landscaping was an after thought.  It's so obvious that the exterior of a home plot is as important as the build itself and the same should be said for interior design.

Self Build is a massively brave & thrilling journey and I hope that by working with me, just helps you to enjoy the process just that bit more.

Good luck & have fun.

A Blog about Blogs

I started this blog back in February, and every week without fail I've shared a blog a week.  It was in the hope that other interior designers, students or home interior lovers found it of use and I thought it would be a great time coming up to the half year point to stop and reflect.  Reflect on what's working, what do you want to read more about or indeed, what I have yet to explore.  As a business owner or freelancer building a following can & does take time & effort and as Country Interior Design by MJ is coming up to our 6 month review it's poignant to pause and check in with ourselves & you the most important aspect as to why we are doing this.  We have been sharing content of inspiration on Facebook and Instagram from the start with a clear weekly schedule: Mondays  Devine or Decadence  Tuesday  History of interior design  Wednesday  Feb 26: Room of Ferial August 26: Shine a light Thursday  Colour Psychology  Frid...

Holiday inspiration for your next interior design project.

This blog is how you could use your holiday as a way of inspiring your next interior design project & on our SM pages recently we had a focus on the Great British Holiday, go take a look at Country Interior Design by MJ Facebook & Instagram accounts to learn more. Each Seaside area of the UK, gives a different feel, be it Blackpool, whereby the bright lights and the Pleasure Beach dominates or right down to the most Southernly tip of Cornwall, whereby a more subtle, relaxed vibe is encapsulated?  I've been working on an interior design project for my portfolio and I read a great book: The English Seaside by Peter Williams. It's a great source of inspiration for a Seaside Interior design style. Whether your looking for a Retro Seaside makeover from yesteryear or you want to recreate your wonderful holiday memories in your home, in a more subtle way? The landscape of a typical resort has changed immensely over the years, however some things remain and can help you with va...
