Let's talk Victoriana Interior Design

Yeah we have got here. It's almost 6 months since we began this journey of Country Interior Design by MJ and we are delighted to have finally got to writing about one of our most favourite   interior design Style: Victoriana.

I've always enjoyed history and Period dramas are just my favourite genre of streaming to watch.  Maybe I'm an old Romantic at heart or maybe it's the fashions but there is something about the Victorian era that inspires my creativity.

So what is Victoriana interior design Style all about & how could you recreate it yourself?

1, Decorative fittings: The Victorian room embellished the walls with friezes, dado rails, cornice & coving along with picture rails and high skirting boards. These are relatively easy to replicate and can transform the aesthetic look of a room.

2, Fireplaces: The focal point of any Victorian home, the most important part of this type of fireplace were the cast iron grates with glazed & ornate tiled surrounds with various designs of fire surrounds from Marble to Slate & softwood.

3, Stairs: elaborate balustrades& posts with carved or turned wooden balustrades with newel posts at the end of each flight came in favour in the gothic Victorian stairs.

4, Ceilings and Floors: Ceiling roses and cornices were fitted above Chandeliers, along with plain ceilings were common place, until the later period of Victoriana, when the use of anaglypta came into fashion.

Floors were usually floor boards in mahogany or oak & it would have be stained, painted or varnished and then polished.  Alternatively, parquet flooring was used around the boarders of a room with a Central carpet. Ceramic tiles in varying designs where used notably in porches and hall ways.

5, Wallpaper: This era was the boom time for wallpaper, many had simple geometric designs or flock wallpapers. Others chose simpler designs so not to distract from the mass of pictures hung on the walls. William Morris designs is synonymous with this wallpaper trend of the time although this was exclusive and limited.

6, Window Dressings: It was a layered affair to protect furniture from fading.  Having pelmets and tie backs in heavy fabric or tapestry.  The use of shutters was as a security measure with lockable mechanisms.

7, Lighting: Numerous candles adorned a Victorian room with either gas or oil lamps. The main focal point would have been a chandelier in the centre of a room.

8, Unique pieces: Bell pulls which were used to alert staff be it maids & butlers to be on call.  You can still find these in various Antique Centres.

Colour palettes from this era was a way of disguising soot and smoke stains, so darker colours became more popular.  Deep Burgundy, Navy or Racing green would be the main primary colour used.

This style is definitely my happy place and while I appreciate it's not always the first choice for clients, you can easily blend different complimentary interior design styles together.  Giving a classy, opulent and charming look to your modern homes.
