Elements of Rustic

Log piles, antlers and tweed or faux fur soft furnishings is synonymous with the Rustic look and can help elevate the overall rustic interior design Style aesthetic.

Think of rough sawn wood and you are already half way there. Old Scaffold boards or reclaimed wooden planks would easily look in place in this type of setting.

I've been researching Rustic Interiors and came across this book by Emily Henson called Modern Rustic and the book is filled with stunning ideas as an interpretation of Rustic, here's a few of my favourite ones:

1, Rough Textures: Brick walls, textured concrete, flag stone floors are embraced, making for an authentic and rugged style.

2, Paint Finishes: Lime paint in Matt finish, adds to the almost aged style of the Rustic look.

3, Cool & Uncluttered: select just a few items of  large furniture. Keep the room clear and store away any items that do not compliment the Rustic style.

4, Natural Materials: Cow hide rugs, leather surfaces, sheepskin chair covers or pure wool chucky knitted throws, give a cosy look in what could feel like a cold look. Bringing  depth and warmth.

5, Open Architecture: Pillars, open roof beams and high ceilings suit the Rustic look, like a return to nature.  Honest & Real.

6, Chucky Furniture: A chucky raw trestle table, is a perfect piece that will set your Rustic room, as if it was a log cabin in the middle of the Canadian Forests.

7, Statement Piece: A barrel wooden bath is a spectacular addition for this interior design style as an example, it's worth shopping around for that one special piece; unique in nature and a real showstopper.

8, Stone Fireplaces; similar to flagstone floors, stone and brick fireplaces are an striking and raw feature.  Let it take Centre stage.

Just to add a Rustic room can swallow the light, so be sure to add as much natural light as possible and enhance with artificial lighting. Both task lighting (strong direct lights) & Accent lighting (spotlight on specific objects or feature) are as important as the ambient lighting which provides the overall illumination.

I really like this pure and Rustic style, it's got a real authenticity to it.  Understated and real.
