All things: PAINT!!

The choices of paint brands has exploded in recent years, with Farrow and Balls growth becoming a more mainstream choice.  However, there are plenty of different brands out there, the question to ask yourself is: What is your paint project firstly?

I could easily list the different paint brands:
Little Green
Frenchic
Brian Yates
Ulf Moritz
Zoffany ltd
Dixie Belle
Dulux Heritage

As well as the main stream:
Dulux
Homestore brands from DIY outlets like Wickes, B&Q and Dunelm.
Johnstone's

I'd recommend a visit to a paint Centre initally, that was you can purchase a number of testers or sample pots and get them home to try them on the walls.  Depending on which way your room is facing, will affect the light and shade in different corners of your rooms and a colour selection may look completely different at different times of day & night. Plus if you're adding multiple coats, this could add depth to the colour.

When your purchasing your paint, it's definitely worth considering the paint finish it's going to give you.  Plus the other consideration is the room in which your going to use it in.

Best example is using a matte paint that requires wiping in a kitchen, they all have finishes that suite a purpose or will help you achieve a certain look. High traffic walls like those in a hallway or boot room, may require to be wiped over more frequently, so worth thinking about.

Take a look at what it says on the paint tin, finishes start from:
Low sheen and Matte
Eggshell
Satin
Silk
Gloss

Plus what are you using the paint on?

I'm a huge fan of the spray aerosols as a favoured tool for an interior designer, that can instantly transform an upcycled or repurposed household item or give attention to detail in a flash or a spray.

Just remember to mask around the item your looking to refresh, so not to get overspray & keep the area, well ventilated. A face mask, is always wise and gloves of course.

This blog is exploring paints, and it's also worth mentioning that stains and waxes, that can also change the colour in a room (more about this in a future blog), I'm reminding you to check what material or surface your looking to paint first before you make your selection.

Different surfaces will require different paints to, like metals and plastics.  Be sure to read the small print on the tin because it will tell you what your paint will adhere to.

Take a look at this House & Gardens Magazine article on How to choose your perfect paint colour:
 https://www.houseandgarden.co.uk/gallery/how-to-choose-paint-colours

I'd highly recommend picking up a selection of Magazines to help inspire you with your colour selections, while giving thought into how your going to use the space. Take a look at our Thursdays Social media posts on Colour Psychology as it could help you with your paint colour selection.

The other thing to mention here is about the right equipment.  I live quite close to Harris Brush factory in Bromsgrove, Worcs, which has been there for years and is an established and trusted paint brush brand. You can pick up brushes from other brands, it's just worth checking the quality of the bristles. Plus the size of the brush and whether you want to use a spray or roller system.

Painting a room requires thought.
Starting with the ceiling and work your way down the room. Be sure to check & prepare the walls and surfaces before you start to ensure they are as level as possible. Then paying attention to the woodwork as the final element to the room makeover.

NB: If you're going to mask off to get clean lines, be sure to apply a suitable tape to the surface your applying it to. This ensures crisp lines without paint lift.

Last but by no means least, set your self a playlist, to make it an enjoyable experience, it's one of those rewarding ID jobs, that can instantly make an impact and it gives you the opportunity to switch off from the outside noise and be mindful.
